i was trying to set up a bluetooth mouse and one of the devices on the bluetooth list i didn't recognize. i clicked it and i think it sent a number out to the bluetooth device to type in so it could link to my mac.
after that i realized it was my neighbor's mac.
does this mean all they have to do is type the number and they can get into my computer? all my photos went missing yesterday and i found the the iphoto file mysteriously moved to another folder with some other photos which i couldn't possibly have done myself since i haven't accessed that file recently.
also just now i noticed that the "bluetooth file exchange" app is suddenly open.
what should i do?

OS X won't let you boot legacy software without a superdrive. I've tried at least 100 times. It can't be done. Boot Camp will not allow you to install from a USB drive. If you have the ISO of windows 7 just install it in parallels and enjoy.
What he said :) Sorry man.

This is wierd
I came past 10 minutes ago and there were about 20 people outside maybe more
I went looking for breakfast, came back and now there's only 7 people between me and the front of the queue
(an some guy is scrubbing the pavement clean)
either they are batch processing the early arrivers OR there was a big fight and the guy is scrubbing away the blood

Sorry, but I'll be checking in on the rumour sites during the show. delayed gratification is one thing, but, i won't be able to wait.
You guys obviously have more self restraint than I!
(Damn, I obviously still have US spelling turned on. It's RUMOURS, Macbook. Geddit???)

... But PLEASE SOMEBODY help me here! ..as i said, im not very computer literate and only just started producing music using computers so please use dummy terms lol ..thanks in advance
The amazon.com page you linked to did not have any meaningful specs. They only list the kinds of interface and give no performance numbers. So this could be working just fine but only it's a slow drive.
Also when people say to record to an external they mean only your data goes there. keep all thos system files on the system drive

Final fantasy 7, or any other classic psx game
There's software out there that converts your psx games into playable form on the psp. Final fantasy 7 should last you 30-40 hours, so that takes care of your trip. It also saves you on battery life since its running off of the memory card.

Yes, yes, I know that all technology is obsolete the second you take it out of the box, wahwahwah. Heh. Sorry.
Anyway, I've been using this early 2006 C2D MBP for 5 years now and it's been a great machine. It was my first mac and, other than battery problems, it was a fantastic experience that has driven me to purchase apple again.
These new iMacs look fantastic and I'm pretty sure I want to get a 27inch model. My question is regarding how best to ensure I get 5-6 years of great performance out of the computer, hardware-wise.
Money isn't really an issue, but obviously I don't want to spend more than I have to.
1) Is the i7 worth it over the i5? I game, use photoshop, handbrake and the occasional final cut/video editing project. I've been seeing hellhammer give "evidence" that the i7 actually can perform worse for gaming (of course, not by much). Will this be true in 3 years (yeah, I know no one can predict the future, just asking for best educated guesses from the experts)? For instance, will we likely be seeing more games make use of hyperthreading?
2) 1gb vs 2gb vram. I've noticed a lot of people talking about the fact that the 6790m isn't powerful enough to actually ever need 2gb of vram. Is this something that is true right now but could change over time? I don't know the tech details of why 2gb can't really be used, so I don't know if this is something that is the result of the way current software uses the gpu or if 2gb will never, ever be useful on the 6790m.
Hmm, I think those are my two biggest questions. Sorry for the wall-o-text. Just looking for advice on how to get the most longevity out of the system without being uninformed and just buying the top of the line across the board.
Thanks!

Before someone yells at me :) I have searched and searched for a thread.
I'm seriously considering an iPad 2 and am leaning towards the 3G as I'd like access anywhere. Trade off of course is that it costs more.
I have an iPhone 4 with the Hotspot feature. Can I use this as an internet connection for the iPad where wifi is not available?
Cheers

I'm pretty good programming in PHP and Javascript, but now I need something that allows me to create simple desktop apps. Mostly it will be for automation scripts, too much for Apple Script, but not complex enough to jump into Cocoa and Objective-C. Examples: Manipulating text files (sorting, dupe line checking, adding/cutting parts, splitting/combining files etc.), uploading a file to several different FTP servers, sending POST requests to a server.
I often hear Pearl and Python mentioned and I believe they are pre-installed on the Mac, but I don't know much about them. What's the main difference? Which one (or something else?) would be best suited for these tasks? Which one is easier to learn?
Bonus: What's a good site to learn for someone who has general programming knowledge, but is a total noob with those languages?

I move to a different desk area in the summer. You could try that. You'll need a DVI extension cable, etc.

So since it is Wednesday I am assuming this amounted to absolutely nothing.
No... it amounted to some spectacular Northern Lights displays. My wife showed me bunch that were captured last night and posted to the web.... I don't know where she found them.... but they were spectacular. :)

Open the Console.app in the Utilities folder. Bring up the context menu on each log listed on the left hand side and hit Reveal in Finder. It is perfectly safe to delete them all. Yes those logs will get MASSIVE. Afterward you should empty the Trash.

How exactly does that work? I replaced my own battery when its life went to poo.
So, Apple will replace a dinged up CD MBP for a brand new MBP because of short battery life?

It's like Speed: 2. Props to the rail system for averting disaster though.
Pity UB40 weren't on this runaway train - might have done us all a favour.

I am having a bit of a problem with my Mail.
I have about 10 accounts set up and recently two of them have started constantly telling me that the server has refused the password and to enter it again. Sometimes I have to enter it 10 times, sometimes i even need to quit mail to clear it. It only happens when I leave mail open for a long time.
The tricky thing is... All 10 accounts are on the same mail server. So it's not a server issue. To further prove this, it doesn't happen on my G5 just on my PowerBook. I've tried to drop the accounts and readd them, deleted the entries out of Keychain...
iI dont want to trash the prefs file unless I have to cause I'll have to set up ALL my accounts again!
Any ideas?
Thanks

OWC is making a Mac Pro PCI Express SSD aren't they? I haven't heard about it in what seems like a few months.
They are doing lots of things. They have been talking about the SSD firmware updater for OS X for ages now and it still does not exist. I guess the PCIe SSD requires relatively lots of work while the market for it is small. It may come some day.

That's actually the 'Batmobile' Newton. One of three prototype versions that were superseded to market by the 4th and final version. You can see the three here (with a link to a flickr page showing more pics of the Batmobile version):
http://www.cultofmac.com/bic-cadillac-and-batmobile-three-newton-prototypes/26708
This ebay one is missing the bit that actually refers to its name, the batmobile type snap-on cover. Still rare, but without the cover... I dunno. A few were actually made for a TV show in a limited production run (like the Powerbook in Independence Day), something Apple did a bit of back then.
